How to Hope: Lessons from the Israelites and Their Messianic Expectation, Part 27 (Second Coming Chapel Sermon #242)

TEXT: Psalm 2

1 Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?

2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord, and against his anointed, saying,

3 Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.

4 He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision.

5 Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure.

6 Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.

7 I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.

8 Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.

9 Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.

10 Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth.

11 Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling.

12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.

——-

Billy Graham said, “When Christ comes again — as he repeatedly promised to do — he will come through the heavens with glory and power, accompanied by a host of angels. All the earth will see His coming, and even His enemies will realize they have been opposing the Son of God.”

In the days before Connecticut became a state, the colonial legislature was in session when a thick black cloud blocked out the sunlight. Someone shouted, “It is the Day of Judgment Let’s go home and get ready.” But one member of the legislature, who happened to be an old church deacon, stood up and said, “Brethren, it may be The Day of Judgment–I do not know. The Lord may come. But when He does, I want Him to find me at my post, doing my duty up to the very last moment. Mr. Speaker, I move that candles be brought in and that we get on with the business of the colony.” In the same way, as we have seen tonight the signs are pointing to the fact that Jesus could return at any moment. But until He does, our duty as His servants is to make the best use of our talents and our opportunities. We need to continue doing the business of His Kingdom, by sharing the Gospel message of His Love and His Grace with everyone that is lost and dying in their sins.

By way of introduction, the Bible Knowledge Commentary continues, “God’s reaction is stated in human terms. Based on His contempt for their evil plan God will speak in His burning wrath against them. Probably verse 6 summarizes what He says, for His resolution to install His king in Jerusalem will be the end of their rebellion. Zion, referred to 40 times in the Book of Psalms, was originally a Canaanite city conquered by David. Later Zion referred to the temple area and then to the entire city of Jerusalem. Holy hill is a synonym for the temple mount. When God establishes His king, He also subjugates those who oppose His king. It was true with David; it will also be true at the end of the age with David’s greater Descendant, Jesus Christ.”

In our last message, we looked at how the hope that we have for the Second Coming based upon the Covenant that God made with King David. We continue that theme in this message. This passage is about King David, but from it we see several parallels to King Jesus and His future kingdom on earth. Notice three points from this passage:

First, the enemies of the Lord. This passage describes how the rulers of the nations surrounding Israel plotted to conquer God’s chosen people and dethrone King David. Even so, today’s society rebels against God’s Word and His authority. In Revelation, we see the armies of the world, led by the AntiChrist, who gather to “make war with the Lamb” and “gathered together to make war against Him that sat on the horse, and against His army.”

Second, look at the assurance of Christ’s reign. All the armies of the world cannot stand against the King of the World. This passage tells us that the heathen nations are imagining a vain or futile thing when they plot to overthrow God’s Anointed. “He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision. Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure. Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.” The Lord has decreed that Christ is King and shall take the heathen nations of the earth as His inheritance when the time is right. When we as Christians feel marginalized by a society that promotes and celebrates sin, we can take hope in knowing that the earth is the Lord’s, and He will eventually come to claim it.

Now, if you are not a believer in Jesus Christ, I urge you to trust in Him because He is coming again and you do not want to be left behind. Here is how you can place your faith and trust in Him for Salvation from sin and the consequences of sin.

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.

Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you just trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and you prayed that prayer and meant it from your heart, I declare to you that based upon the Word of God, you are now saved from Hell and you are on your way to Heaven. Welcome to the family of God! Congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is receiving Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour. God loves you. We love you. And may God bless you.
